Esperança Helps Nicaragua Woman Receive Much Needed Healthcare in the United States

a  46 year-old woman from Nicaragua, who desperately needs surgery for an ureterovaginal  fistula that resulted from a very difficult surgery, performed by volunteer surgeon. She will travel to San Francisco courtesy of Esperança, an international nonprofit whose mission is to improve the health and well being of the world’s poor and the Lion’s Club of San Francisco .  Upon arriving, she’s scheduled to receive pro-bono healthcare from Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center.

The surgery, equipment, supplies and doctor’s time will be donated by Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center.  Esperança will cover the travel costs and any transportation and while the patient is in the United States. The patient will remain in the San Francisco area for approximately three weeks.  During her recovery period, Kaiser Permanente will provide follow-up care.

Dr. Diane Sklar, a gynecologic surgeon, who has volunteered her time with Esperança for seven years will perform the surgery with Dr Arturo Martinez , a Kiaser urologist.   She has completed eight volunteer medical missions outside of the United States with Esperança and is passionate about giving back to those less fortunate.

Dr. Sklar completed a medical mission trip to Nicaragua in May 2012 and met this particular patient for consultation.  She learned that the Nicaragua doctors were unsuccessful in attempting to repair the patient’s fistula and due to the difficulty of the procedure,  and availability of specialized equipment at Kaiser, Dr. Sklar recommended she come to the United States for the final procedure to repair her condition.

Tom Egan, president and CEO of Esperança notes, “Dr. Sklar and her team are committed to the poor and uninsured regardless of where they are from.  This woman has lived with Massive fibroids in her uterus for more than seven years.  The fibroids were symptomatic and made her look 6-months pregnant and has made her a social outcast in her small village.  She has never married or had children Dr. Sklar’s willingness to provide quality care to her in the United States is her only hope of being cured.  It’s truly remarkable what Dr. Sklar and her team are willing to do to help.”

“In our country there has been much discussion and debate about our healthcare system. Whatever your beliefs on that discussion are, we still have the best healthcare system in the world.  The families and children that we see in the developing world have either never seen a doctor before in their life or as in the case of this woman, the system in her home country is not capable of helping her,” added Egan.

The Kaiser Permanente team will consist of Dr. Sklar, Dr. Robert Karoukian, anesthesiologist, who has done 3 trips with Esperanca in both Bolivia and Nicaragua and Dr. Martinez, urologist.  The estimated value of this donated surgery is $50,000 and an additional $5,000 in travel and lodging costs.

The patient is scheduled to depart on Jan. 17 and the surgeon will take place in San Francisco on Jan. 22. Dr. Sklar will be available for interviews.  Should you want to attend, please contact Lindsay Hansen, PR Consultant (480-205-6195) or Christina Araiza, Esperança Program Director (602-252-7772 EXT. 104) to make arrangements.

Esperança Announces New Board Members

Esperança is pleased to announce Chelsea Sage Durkin and Paula Eick have joined the organization’s board of directors.

Chelsea Sage Durkin is an attorney at Osborn Maledon, P.A. As a litigation associate, her practice focuses on general commercial litigation, criminal defense and attorney regulation. She’s a Phoenix native and has diverse connections in the community. She is a board member for Angels on Patrol and volunteers with Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development.

“We’re thrilled to have Chelsea on our board,” said Tom Egan, president and CEO of Esperanca. “She’s a third generation supporter of Esperança. Her grandmother and parents have been supporters for at least 20 years. It’s really neat to have families share the tradition of community giving with their children and grandchildren. Chelsea is very familiar with our mission.”

Paula Eick is safety director/risk manager at Adolfson & Peterson Construction. She’s been there for the past five years and is responsible for health, safety and environmental compliance on jobsites in Arizona, California, Washington and Oklahoma.

“The mission of Esperança is appealing to me in that it addresses the most basic needs people often take for granted: clean water, access to health care including basic knowledge about nutrition and disease, and safe and clean living quarters. I am hopeful that my talents can help make a difference in the lives of others,” said Eick.

Business Journal Executive Profile

From an early age, Tom Egan, president and CEO of Phoenix nonprofit Esperança, had his sights set on a career that would allow him to help people in need. He was the eldest child of a single mother, who contended with both financial struggles and a hearing handicap. “I just kind of developed, early on, a sense that I wanted to help families, particularly women and children,” said Egan, identifying his mother as his primary source of inspiration.

Esperança, which means “hope” in Portuguese, provides a wide range of medical and educational services to poverty-stricken communities, both domestic and abroad, through volunteer programs and partnerships with indigenous nongovernment organizations.  “When you’ve got big problems, like global public health and poverty, none of those can be solved by one individual or one organization,” said Egan. “It takes a strong, collaborative relationship. People have to come together to tackle these big issues.”

Though Egan joined Esperança in March 2011, he has been involved in community outreach and nonprofit aid for nearly 20 years.  He focused his educational background on this field, culminating with a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling from the University of Akron in Ohio.  “I thought this was something I was good at. I felt like I could contribute and help a lot of people,” said Egan.

In 1995, Egan began working at a community mental health center in Cleveland, his first position out of college. A year later, he became a supervisor at Cleveland Healthcare for the Homeless, where he discovered his affinity for administration in nonprofit work. This was followed by a move to Arizona in 1998, and his tenure at Catholic Charities Community Services as director of program operations until 2011.

“Maybe I wasn’t directly doing the on-the-ground work anymore, but I was able provide leadership and strategic direction,” said Egan. “You can’t get where you’re going if you don’t know where you want to go.”  Esperança’s programs extend around the globe. Though primarily active in Latin America, specifically Bolivia and Nicaragua, the organization also provides education and medical services to poverty-stricken communities in Mozambique, Africa, and in Phoenix.

This includes clean water and sanitation practices, disease prevention, sustainable home building and improved farming techniques. “It’s all the basics: food, water, housing and health,” said Egan, who identified Volunteer Surgical Program as Esperança’s standout service. This initiative sends medical personal abroad for one- to two-week periods, for the purpose of providing medical care in otherwise inaccessible communities. “In that time, they’re going to do 40 to 50 surgeries,” said Egan, which is equitable to “hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of surgery” if preformed in the U.S. He said Esperanca is able to provide these services for a cost of only “about $7,000” per trip.

Egan said surgeons abroad often must think on their feet, as they are forced to contend with subpar operating conditions and severe resource limitations. He believes in prioritizing the efforts to combat international poverty. “We spend millions of dollars on one machine in the United States that does one, specific purpose,” he said. “But when you’re working in the developing world, they don’t even have money for clean sheets or hospital beds.”

Still, Egan conceded the task of combating international poverty remains daunting at times. “My biggest barrier is finding people who have a world vision, that have an interest in the developing world,” he said. “The least favorite part of my job is that there’s always going to be more need than I have the resources to meet. So you have to prioritize, and you can’t do everything that you need to do.” Despite this, Egan remains adamant about continuing Esperança’s fight for health and education abroad.

“You can literally see an entire community transformed from the work that we’ve done,” he said. He hopes to expand the organization’s efforts to new countries and increase its local awareness and efforts. “You can tell the suffering they had is just relieved,” he said, referring to the facial expressions of post operation patients, “and that’s really rewarding.”

Many thanks to Delta Dental of Arizona

We’re thrilled to announce that Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation has awarded grant funding in the amount of $10,000 to Esperanca to expand our Oral Health program for pre-school and elementary children in Phoenix.

On March 8th, 2012, Delta Dental presented Tom Egan, president and CEO and Maria Valenzuela, Community Health Coordinator of Esperanca with the check.  The funds will be used to hire, train and equip staff to provide oral health education to children ages 4-12 in the Isaac and Cartwright school districts and parents of 0-5 year olds enrolled in Head Star/Early Head Start.

Children and parents who receive services through this project live in communities that have poverty levels two to three times the national average and misinformation about children’s oral health is rampant.  Many students from both districts have no access to regular dental care, and proper brushing, flossing, and other preventative care may not be taught in the home.

In addition to oral health education, all participants will receive oral hygiene kits with a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss so that they are able to practice what they learned at the trainings.

Corporate support means everything to our programs and we’re so grateful for the donation from Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation.  Their generous donation will allow us to expand our program and reach more children and families throughout Phoenix, Maryvale and the Golden Gate community.

Esperança dedicates building to the Tupper Family

On Thursday March 1, 2012 friends and family of the Tupper family, past staff and supporters of Esperança gathered in the courtyard of Esperança for a dedication of Esperança headquarters to Esperança founders and brothers, Father Luke and Jerry Tupper.

A plaque honoring the service of both men was unveiled by widow of Jerry Tupper, Barbara. It was recognized and agreed upon by all that Barbara’s sacrifice was instrumental in the launch and success of Esperança. Jerry’s efforts to build a firm foundation for the organization were only possible with the unwavering support from Barbara.

The celebration included talks from former Executive Directors, past volunteers and family members. Sue Johnson, Jerry’s daughter spoke of the passion she saw in her uncle and father to help the sick. Bill Dolan, Program Director from 1987 to 1994 told of Esperança’s major contribution to eradicating Polio in Brazil with its extensive vaccination campaign in the 1970s.

After 42 years, Esperança continues to bring hope, provide health and transform communities globally. We are grateful to the Tupper Family for creating this wonderful force for good in the world.

That’s one big check!

While we are most well known for our international health work, we also do some amazing prevention and health education work in our local community. As we previously talked about in our blog, our local program’s excellence was recognized by Catholic Healthcare West when we received a grant for $50,000 for two years to support our nutrition and healthy living program Salud con Sabor Latino, or Health with a Latin Twist. We are grateful that our partners at Catholic Healthcare West have chosen to invest in us, and believe as we do that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Even though they didn’t spell our name correctly, the bank still cashed the check. Hooray!
