Drop the Weight with Esperança!
New calendars, cold weather and a heaping serving of post-holiday buffet remorse: it must be January. Amid the belated Christmas cards, catalogs and advertisements for the clearance sales, I hope you’ll find this month’s Esperança newsletter in your mail box. What would January be without our annual resolution issue?
This year, we’re resolving to reach more of the poor – to help more people – to improve the world with better health. Sure, they sound like lofty ideas that may or may not come to pass, but fortunately, we have the knack of turning such naiveté into positive action. Our founder, Father Luke Tupper, took a vision of improving the health of the poor in Brazil and resolved to make it his life’s mission. He was more than successful; some 38 years later, his vision has resulted in helping more than a million people in more than 14 countries. The next time someone tells you one person can change the world, remind them of Father Tupper. He’s an excellent exception to that rule.
What are your resolutions for the New Year? To save more money? To lose weight? To get more involved with Esperança? Selfishly, we hope it’s the latter. This month we’ll be talking about Esperança’s goals for 2008 and how we resolve to continue spending $.90 of every dollar you donate directly to improve the health of the poor internationally. Thank you for continued support and cheers to another great year in philanthropy!
Warm regards,
Kelli Donley, MPH
