Donate - Surgery

You cannot find healthcare anywhere in the world as fiscally effective as Esperança’s surgical program. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteer surgeons, we are able to provide more than 40 surgeries to those in need for just $5000. We send eight of such teams each year to Bolivia.

Juliana Ortega had a ruptured appendix but no one knew until the little girl was dangerously toxic, and gravely ill. Because so many of Bolivia’s people live in poor, remote areas, they simply do not have the funds or proximity to access the most basic health care services. Juliana’s parents heard Esperança’s visiting surgical team was at the Tarija hospital and took a chance on bringing their sick daughter to the hospital. The team was able to see her immediately and save her life from the nearly lethal infection.

Hilaria Vera almost didn’t make it into this world. Her mother, Alma works in a potato field, in Bolivia, 12 hours a day to help her husband Elijo provide for their family of five. Hilaria’s mother did not receive prenatal care; they do not have the money for such a luxury. Alma had no way of knowing that she had a serious condition that necessitated a Cesarean Section. Nor did she know the visiting surgical team from Esperança would save her life and that of her unborn daughter’s, simply by being in the right place when she began to labor and hemorrhage. An Esperança community health worker was able to diagnosis and arrange transport for Alma to the local hospital in Camargo, where the Esperança surgical volunteers saved both mother and child.

Benita Dominguez trudges out to the farm daily to help support her family, even though this grandmother of 12 has a massive goiter on her neck. The goiter and all the troubles associated were something she thought she would just have to bear. All that changed when the visiting surgical volunteers from Esperança came to her small town of Entre Rios. The surgeons were able to remove the goiter and return Benita in good health to her family. Benita is a typical Esperança patient -- if there ever is a typical patient in a developing country.
